Challenge
Widening and reconstructing a heavily traveled six-mile segment of I-75, including the reconstruction and realignment of the I-75/I-475 interchange in Perrysburg, Ohio. Improvements included rebuilding multiple ramps, constructing a new ramp bridge, and rehabilitating an existing bridge.
Solution
E.S. Wagner Company made extensive updates to the Maintenance of Traffic plan to produce a safer, more productive, and schedule-efficient workflow. A 120-day closure of the I-75/I-475 interchange was implemented, and numerous earthwork and structure construction crews were deployed to complete the complex grading and structure scopes. ESW’s approach allowed for an on-time opening of the critically important interchange, and numerous value engineering proposals resulted in overall cost savings to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Project Scope
E.S. Wagner Company completed the highway widening and rebuilding of six miles of I-75 and the I-475 (US 23) interchange in Perrysburg, Ohio. The job included 263,000 cubic yards of excavation, the removal of over 316,000 square yards of existing concrete pavement, and the installation of over 70 miles of storm drain and new utilities. The work required the construction of one new ramp bridge in a location that was previously solid ramp embankment that was removed to allow for the structure construction and the rehabilitation of an existing bridge during a 120-day interchange closure. ESW’s self-performance capability was a critical element of this project, allowing for control of the aggressive timeline and completion milestones. ESW was able to safely execute the completion of this project both ahead of schedule and under budget.
