Project Scope

E.S. Wagner Co., LLC, in a Joint Venture partnership with Smith- Rowe, LLC, alongside dedicated subcontractors, completed the final five miles of Interstate 840 around Greensboro, NC. Officially opened to traffic in Q1 of 2023, the project finalized the city’s Urban Loop, creating a vital transportation corridor designed to ease congestion on existing infrastructure and significantly reduce travel times for the traveling public. The extensive scope of work encompassed mass excavation and embankment, underground utility installation, reinforced concrete box culverts, bridges, soil nail walls, shoring, concrete paving, erosion control, and multiple complex traffic switches. Despite facing severe external challenges—including operating through the three wettest years on record and navigating a global pandemic—the Joint Venture and NCDOT collaborated closely throughout the life of the project. By making constant adjustments and driving acceleration, the team opened a key two-mile segment nearly two years early, ultimately delivering infrastructure that will benefit the region for generations to come.
