Challenge
A project critical to CLT’s infrastructure construction programs had fallen behind, jeopardizing the schedule of the Fourth Parallel Runway initiative.
Solution
E.S. Wagner Company stepped in to take over the partially finished job site, which first meant stabilizing the site, correcting improper and incomplete work left by the previous contractor. Work adjacent to active runways and taxiways required strict safety compliance and limited work windows. ESW leveraged its other projects at CLT, rerouting superior embankment material from the ongoing NEAT project and hauling it in ESW’s specialized on-road haul units to complete the lagging embankments. This type of cross-project planning increased efficiency and recovered the Airport’s schedule.
Project Scope
E.S. Wagner Company completed the site preparation and earthwork for the South Crossfield Taxiway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The job required moving nearly 375,000 cubic yards of dirt, preparing over 217,000 square yards of subgrade, and installing underground utility lines. The work called for strict logistical control to pick up where a prior contractor left off without missing key deadlines. By self-performing the remaining utility connections and mass grading operations within an active airport, ESW successfully completed the project on time.
