CHARLOTTE DOUGLAS — INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT — THIRD PARALLEL RUNWAY

Project Scope

E.S. Wagner Company was a key contributor to the 2007 – 2010 expansion of Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, delivering critical runway, taxiway, bridge, and roadway infrastructure. This project included construction of embankments for a new 9,000-foot runway and taxiways, requiring almost 11 million cubic yards of earthwork, extensive drainage systems, rock excavation, and site clearing across 650 acres. Through highly efficient earthwork operations featuring everything from low ground pressure but high-capacity scrapers to our unique to the industry highly modified Holland Belt Loader, our team overcame difficult and constantly changing subsurface conditions without compromise to production or the necessity for costly soil modifications to complete major earthwork activities ahead of schedule, earning the project’s maximum two-stage early completion incentive. E.S. Wagner also supported the paving package with significant excavation, fine grading, aggregate base placement, and underdrain installation. Additionally, ESW constructed two major taxiway bridges, implementing cost-saving design improvements, finishing both structures well ahead of their respective schedules. These combined early completions helped significantly accelerate the opening of the expanded airfield.
