Challenge

Constructing multiple landfill expansion components with complex liner and leachate collection systems while working within the unique design requirements of the Evergreen RDF Facility.

Solution

E.S. Wagner delivered four separate projects consisting of new landfill cells, closures, and leachate and run-off control features. Success required substantial resource commitment, leveraging innovative construction methods, the application of extensive earthwork and landfill construction expertise, and the coordinated installation of complex liner, drainage, and leachate collection systems.

Project Scope

Waste Management retained E.S. Wagner Company to construct 22.5 acres of new landfill cells, a 4-acre sedimentation pond, and 7 acres of final cap at the Evergreen RDF Facility in Northwood, Ohio. Over a three-year period, ESW performed approximately 1.1 million cubic yards of mass excavation and utilized 120,000 cubic yards of on-site clay to construct recompacted clay liners. The project featured 975 linear feet of 2:1 side slopes, requiring ESW to develop an innovative approach in order to place compacted clay liner on these very steep slopes while maintaining quality. Following earthwork completion, ESW installed approximately 980,000 square feet of 60- mil HDPE geomembrane liner, 75,000 cubic yards of shredded tires for drainage, 2,800 linear feet of 6-inch HDPE leachate collection pipe, and 390 linear feet of 24-inch HDPE slope risers serving three leachate collection sumps. Additional work included 250,000 cubic yards of excavation for a 4-acre sedimentation pond and installation of 1,250 linear feet of 30-inch CMP storm sewer.
