Challenge

Reconstruction and protection of the existing shoreline infrastructure, contending with unpredictable subsurface site conditions and variable lake water currents and water levels, while maintaining channel navigability with final aesthetic improvements alongside one of Lake Erie’s most heavily utilized access waterways.

Solution

ESW utilized careful pre-operation analysis, site investigation, and surgical excavation to limit the impact of subsurface conflicts with permanent sea wall sheeting installation. To promote long- term sustainability in the consistently wet environment, the team submitted and implemented a value engineering cost proposal to replace conventional steel with fiberglass reinforcement.

Project Scope

E.S. Wagner Company executed the shoreline stabilization and sea wall project along the waterfront in Port Clinton, Ohio. The primary objective was to drive 1,000 linear feet of 30’ steel sheet piling to halt active land erosion and secure the shoreline against turbulent lake currents. The project combined heavy civil engineering with high-end aesthetic finishes. Beyond the driven sheeting and the placement of 600 cubic yards of structural concrete that formed the cap on the sheeted sea wall, the scope included the installation of 21,000 square feet of decorative stamped and colored concrete. This specialized finish provided the community with a durable, visually appealing, and erosion-resistant public space.
