## Challenge

Coordinating 26.6 miles of new highway construction under a single contract that integrated three independently designed project segments and bridge redesigns driven by environmental constraints, managing unstable soil and embankment conditions, while maintaining an aggressive schedule despite weather impacts and evolving site conditions.

## Solution

E.S. Wagner organized and managed a joint venture allowing both partners to self-perform their specialties, maintained an aggressive schedule through multiple concurrent operations, utilized innovative technologies, and expedited excavation operations with our specialty Belt Loader. An ESW-developed quarrying operation, a multi-million-dollar Value Engineering Proposal, and an aggressive first season schedule that completed the first seven miles of the project helped overcome unseasonably wet conditions in the second season and guarantee the successful delivery of this critical U.S. 30 corridor improvement.

## Project Scope

E.S. Wagner Company served as the managing partner of a joint venture to construct 26.6 miles of new four-lane highway between Upper Sandusky and Ada, Ohio, completing the final segment of four- lane U.S. 30 connecting Canton, Ohio, to Fort Wayne, Indiana. The project included 4.4 million cubic yards of total excavation, 21 bridge structures, 117,000 linear feet of drainage, and 860,000 linear feet of underdrains. Despite environmental constraints, geotechnical challenges, and the coordination of three separate design packages under a single contract, E.S. Wagner maintained progress through focused project management and massive resource commitment. A Value Engineering Proposal replacing lime with Lime Kiln Dust for subgrade stabilization generated several million dollars in savings shared with the owner. ESW produced required granular embankment in an adjacent borrow pit by blasting and sizing rock, reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and promoting safety by reducing the volume of trucks utilizing the area roadways. The project achieved key milestone openings ahead of schedule and successfully delivered this critical transportation corridor while maintaining environmental compliance.
