## Challenge

Delivering 11 miles of new highway requiring significant borrow material location and procurement as well as critical storm drainage and sanitary sewer infrastructure installation below a water-bearing sand layer that required extensive dewatering. Coordinating the erection of bridge beams for multiple-level structures over the active US 23.

## Solution

E.S. Wagner designed and implemented an extensive underground well system to overcome complex dewatering required for underground piping installations. The team managed embankment construction and bridge erection challenges through strategic planning and coordinated execution over active US 23. Value engineering of ten bridge structures resulted in multi-million-dollar savings, helping deliver the new highway six months ahead of schedule.

## Project Scope

E.S. Wagner served as the managing partner of a joint venture for the Ohio Department of Transportation, delivering 11 miles of new four-lane divided highway between Upper Sandusky and Bucyrus, Ohio. The total project included approximately 7.1 million cubic yards of earthwork, more than 44,000 linear feet of storm sewer, 9,500 linear feet of sanitary sewer, 248,000 tons of aggregate base, and over 620,000 square yards of concrete pavement that was split between the partners. E.S. Wagner led construction of 16 bridge, performing all the structure work on the corridor, placing more than 16,500 cubic yards of structural and high-performance concrete, installing over 6,000 linear feet of H-pile, and constructing 99,000 square feet of MSE wall. Through a value engineering initiative, ten bridges were redesigned from flow-through abutments to MSE wall structures, eliminating two spans per bridge and generating several million dollars in total savings. Despite challenging dewatering requirements that required an expansive ESW-designed and implemented drilled well groundwater management system and complex bridge beam erection operations over active US 23, the team successfully delivered this critical transportation corridor six months ahead of schedule.
