## Challenge

Construction of the Toledo Mud Hens Stadium site package requiring extensive brownfield remediation, wintertime off-site excavation, complex groundwater management, and protection of adjacent historic structures, all while coordinating construction activities within a constrained downtown environment on an aggressive schedule.

## Solution

ESW demonstrated diverse self-performance capabilities in order to control the critical site development work, including brownfield remediation, installation of temporary and permanent steel sheet piling, drilled shaft foundations, site excavation hauled in ESW highway trucks to an off-site location at night to avoid downtown traffic and site congestion, construction of an extensive underdrain system and stormwater pump station, and reconstruction of surrounding utilities and streets. ESW also implemented underpinning and monitoring measures to protect adjacent historic structures while coordinating closely with multiple contractors.

## Project Scope

E.S. Wagner Company completed the site development for the Toledo Mud Hens Baseball Stadium on a former brownfield site in downtown Toledo that required extensive demolition and debris removal before construction could begin. The playing field was built fourteen feet below existing street grade, requiring the installation of more than 60,000 square feet of steel sheet piling and the excavation of 90,000 cubic yards of material, which was hauled off-site to a location secured by ESW. Due to the field’s low elevation, an extensive underdrain system and a new stormwater pump station were constructed to manage drainage. To preserve historically significant surrounding structures, ESW performed underpinning and continuous monitoring of nearby buildings, including a prominent structure beyond the right-field fence, to prevent damage during construction. Permanent stadium features are supported by ESW- installed drilled shaft foundations, and the outfield wall alignment is formed by permanent sheet piling driven by ESW on a highly restricted tolerance. Following stadium construction, the project included reconstruction of perimeter drainage systems, waterlines, sanitary sewers, curbs, and streets to integrate the new facility.
