- **Sector:** Transportation
- **Client:** SCDOT
- **Location:** South Carolina
- **State:** South Carolina
- **Status:** in\_progress

## By the Numbers

- 3 Bridges Totaling 2,070 LF of Cored Slabs
- 4 Bridges Totaling 6,622 LF of Box Beams
- 23,000 CY of Borrow Excavation
- 6,500 TN Asphalt

## Challenge

Managing a seven-bridge design-build package across four counties with varying hurdles, including strict environmental rules, right-of-way limits, and major utility conflicts.

## Solution

E.S. Wagner Company used fast-track scheduling and early design planning to finish all seven bridges ahead of schedule. For S-20, ESW pushed construction from zero plans or permits to an open bridge in a record 147 days—203 days early. For S-998, the team used the 120’ beam span to control costs and keep the timeline predictable, setting a state record for length.

## Project Scope

E.S. Wagner Company delivered the design-build replacement of seven box beam and cored slab bridges across Chesterfield, York, Fairfield, and Lancaster Counties, providing complete services including design coordination, environmental permitting, utility coordination, roadway construction, and bridge installation. The project included approximately 23,000 CY of borrow excavation, 1.1 miles of roadway construction with associated safety improvements, and 6,500 tons of asphalt. The bridge package also featured construction of South Carolina’s first 120-foot box beam span. Through proactive planning and efficient execution, E.S. Wagner completed the work well ahead of schedule, including opening the S-20 bridge 200 days early. The team met all technical requirements while earning high praise from SCDOT for delivering the entire bridge program ahead of schedule.
