## Challenge

Rebuilding four bridges scattered across four different counties required careful scheduling and distinct site setups. The biggest obstacle was at Bridge S-53, where the crew had to find a way to get heavy equipment and materials in and out of a protected, hard-to-reach wetland area without damaging the surrounding environment or stalling the timeline.

## Solution

ESW finished the entire four-bridge package on time and under budget. For the wetland bottleneck at S-53, the field teams put together a targeted access plan to work safely through the wetland. At Bridge S-765, the team and its design partners reviewed the state's initial plans and found a better approach, shortening the bridge and providing a cost reduction to the owner.

## Project Scope

E.S. Wagner Company took on the design-build delivery of four cored slab and box beam bridges across Anderson, Chester, Chesterfield, and Lancaster counties, providing services from design re-evaluation and permitting through environmental compliance, utility coordination, roadway construction, and final bridge installation. The project included approximately 16,000 CY of borrow excavation, 0.5 miles of roadway construction, and 5,000 tons of asphalt across multiple sites. Utility coordination was a critical project component, as it represents one of the greatest risks for schedule delays. A major success resulted from an early design review of Bridge S-765, where E.S. Wagner and its design partners reduced the required bridge span from 200 feet to 140 feet while maintaining all safety and performance requirements. This design optimization generated more than $200,000 in cost savings for SCDOT and highlighted the value of the design-build delivery approach.
