## Challenge

Construction of a pump station wetwell exceeding 50 feet in depth presented significant excavation and structural challenges due to its close proximity to active roadways and existing treatment plant infrastructure. Additional complexity was introduced by the need to construct the intake structure within the river while maintaining site operations and managing environmental and logistical constraints.

## Solution

E.S. Wagner constructed a below-grade pump station using a drilled H-pile and wood lagging shoring system that enabled safe excavation and concrete placement and a raw water intake system that included an in-river cast-in-place intake structure built within a cofferdam formed by driven sheet piling. Barges were used to position equipment for cofferdam installation and construction of the intake structure, while full environmental permit compliance was maintained within a State Scenic River. The project also included installation of pumps, bar screens, 24-inch piping, and a bored casing beneath River Road to create a reliable raw water conveyance system and expand treatment capacity for future growth.

## Project Scope

E.S. Wagner expanded the City of Bowling Green’s water treatment plant’s capacity to meet growing community demand by creating a new raw water intake and pump station. ESW constructed a quad-plex pump station that included a 50+ foot deep wetwell, screening, vertical turbine pumps, and an above- grade pumphouse that housed all mechanical, electrical, and control functions. The project also included construction of a river intake structure and temporary access and launch facilities to support installation activities in the waterway. A casing pipe was installed beneath River Road from the river intake to the pump station, allowing raw water to be conveyed from the river to the new facility. Through innovative shoring and excavation methods and unique in-river construction capabilities, ESW safely delivered a reliable, long-term infrastructure solution that increased treatment capacity and enhanced the City's ability to serve future population growth.
