# LIMA UP GROUND RESERVOIR

- **Sector:** Earthen Containment
- **Client:** City of Lima
- **Location:** Allen County, OH
- **State:** Ohio
- **Status:** complete

## By the Numbers

- 4.5M CY Moisture Conditioned Embankment
- 90K TN Slope Protection
- 850 CY Structural Concrete Influent/Effluent Structures Incl. Mechanical Valving
- 3 Miles of Storm Sewer

## Challenge

Single-season construction of a 9B gallon above ground reservoir consisting of embankments reaching 60’ in height massive while maintaining strict material property control in order to achieve the quality requirements for a watertight embankment system.

## Solution

E.S. Wagner Company’s innovative sequencing, rigorous quality control, and the deployment of multiple earthmoving crews enabled the simultaneous advancement of earthwork, drainage, and structural components. Strict embankment specifications required balancing high-production excavation and placement with the precise control of moisture and compaction to ensure long-term structural integrity and water retention without compromising productivity. Despite complex logistics, restricted access, and stringent performance requirements, this coordinated approach ensured the successful delivery of a durable, high-capacity reservoir system.

## Project Scope

E.S. Wagner served as the prime contractor for the Lima Upground Reservoir, a major infrastructure project designed to increase water capacity for Allen County and the City of Lima. The massive one- square-mile reservoir was completed within a single construction season. Construction of the embankments demanded precise moisture control and compaction to ensure a watertight system - with daily productions approaching 50,000 CY of excavation. Additional work included the installation of a large- scale blanket drain to prevent subsurface water migration, the relocation of an existing wetland, and the construction of structural concrete influent and effluent control structures including more than 900 feet of ductile iron piping. Final work included placement of approximately 90K tons of slope protection using layered aggregate and riprap systems placed at the top of the 60’ embankments. Despite complex logistics, limited access, and stringent quality requirements, ESW successfully delivered a durable, high-capacity reservoir system.
