Phase two of the reconstruction and widening of SC Highway 101 brought construction in to the city of Woodruff, South Carolina. E.S. Wagner served as the prime contractor on this project which included approximately 235,000 cubic yards of excavation, much of which was in rock. The scope of work also included the construction of 2,500 feet of new track for CSX Railroad to accommodate the realignment of a section of mainline rail through the project.
When work began, HWY 101 ran over a bridge which crossed over the CSX Railroad. Under its new alignment, the railroad would run over the proposed highway. This required delicate phasing of the work whereby E.S. Wagner would have to completely construct a proposed bridge for the railroad and switch train traffic before the old track could be taken out of service, the existing bridge demolished, and the roadway construction completed. The new bridge is a reinforced concrete slab deck on steel girders. The structure is supported by the combination of driven h-piles and drilled shafts. E.S. Wagner worked closely with CSX Railroad and the SCDOT to coordinate this complex project and construction was completed on schedule in 2006.
