Beginning in 2002, the South Carolina Department of Transportation let a series of projects to replace and widen SC Highway 101. The first such project was a 7 mile section constructed by E. S. Wagner Company, LLC.

The project required the expansion of the existing and heavily used two lane state route to four lanes. The work, which included over 220,000 cubic yards of excavation and 167,000 square yards of graded aggregate base, was done while maintaining at least one lane of traffic in each direction.

Work on this project was completed on time in late 2004.
